SALT LAKE CITY -- Scientists say there's an approaching collision between the amount of water in the Colorado River basin and the demand from millions of people who rely on it.
The ongoing drought, expected climate change and an increasing population in the West are expected to exacerbate the problems.
Although there is some disagreement about when the most dire conditions will materialize, scientists at a conference in Salt Lake City say they expect less water to be available in the coming decades.
Scientists, activists, students and others gathered Thursday at the University of Utah to discuss the future of the Colorado River.
The conference is called "Adjusting to Less Water: Climate Change and the Colorado River."
