Roy officials want better lighting for new roundabout

ROY -- The city's newest traffic roundabout is getting mostly rave reviews from residents and city council members, but the biggest concern is how dark it is at night.

The roundabout at 4400 South and Airport Road, at about 1700 West, was a joint effort with Ogden and Riverdale kicking in some money to help fund the project where traffic concerns have always been an issue.

Roy built the roundabout and some council members had expressed concern over the intersection as far back as two years ago. Former City Councilman Tommy Smith was concerned that drivers don't know how to drive roundabouts and it could increase traffic hazards.

With that in mind, the city wanted a larger roundabout that would have clear markings on entering and exiting. City Manager Chris Davis and other council members have said they have received quite a few e-mails and positive comments about the new intersection, which opened in the late fall. Even Smith gave the roundabout his blessing, Davis said.

Some residents along with Councilwoman Marge Becraft and Councilman Larry Peterson have expressed concerns over how dark the roundabout is at night and that it could possibly be a hazard.
