Lobbyists buy lawmakers expensive meals, gifts
By The Associated PressSALT LAKE CITY -- Expensive meals, conference registration fees and other entertainment were among the thousands of dollars worth of gifts state lawmakers received from lobbyists in the past three months.
However, financial disclosure reports due Monday show lobbyists rarely identified on whom they spent money or why. Some lawmakers say it's time that practice ends, while others want to ban gifts completely.
Among the identified recipients of gifts is now-retired Democratic Sen. Mike Dmitrich, who had $142 worth of unspecified entertainment in November paid for by lobbyist Paul Rogers, who lobbies for multiple clients, including PacifiCorp.
Republican Sens. Wayne Niederhauser, Mark Madsen and Curt Bramble each had a $174 dollar meal in Washington, D.C. paid for by Comcast lobbyist Steve Proper. The cost of their meals included their spouses.
