Saving Morgan
The great
thing about Morgan County is, it hasn't already been ruined.
You know what we mean. When you drive through so many of the communities along the Wasatch Front, they range from bland to downright ugly. Development appears to have been accomplished on an ad-hoc basis, satisfying the requests and desires of the moment instead of viewing the community as a whole -- integrating residential, commercial, retail, roads, transit and environmental issues in a local or regional plan that makes each complementary of the other.
Morgan County, for the most part, still has a chance to accomplish such Big Picture goals.
That's why we're thrilled to hear that Morgan leaders will be working with Envision Utah, a public-private partnership that we've championed since its inception.
Envision Utah helps communities and counties realize their options for guiding development -- as opposed to planners simply continuing to do things the ways they've always done them.
For example, imagine a painter who was taught to paint by someone who used only a limited number of colors.
Envision Utah would be the new teacher in town who brings along a palette loaded with a vast array of new colors -- and new techniques for applying those colors. Suddenly, a new world is unlocked and the possibilities are boundless.
Envision Utah doesn't tell anyone what to do. Instead, the organization provides the tools with which city leaders and their residents can envision -- thus, the name -- their future.
We look at Morgan County, ringed by those glorious mountains, and imagine that it could remain beautiful and prosperous as it grows.
We hope the people who live there now will make that happen with the help of Envision Utah.
