Bonneville wins playoff for second
FRUIT HEIGHTS -- Few knew what to expect from the first 4-A/5-A state girls golf championships. So to say a pair of surprises highlighted Tuesday's tournament at Davis Park, is perhaps not entirely fair.
Nonetheless, when Carly Dotson knocked down a 1-foot bogey putt on the second playoff hole, the underestimated Bonneville Lakers were celebrating a second-place finish.
Senior Molly Daines drained a 20-foot birdie putt on the par 3 second hole, and fellow senior Jordan Ulibarri sank a 3-footer for par to help the Lakers defeat Skyline and put their name on the second-place trophy.
"It was exciting," Bonneville coach Blair Garner said. "I didn't know this until later, but both Jordan and Carly made birdie on the final hole to put us in the playoff. I couldn't be more happy for these girls."
Favored Dixie, led by the efforts of Kelsey Vines and Lacy Buckner, raced to the team title with a score 237, nine strokes better than Bonneville and Skyline.
"I think the whole difference was we just had good players," admitted Dixie coach Eron Deming. "I wasn't sure about any of the other teams, but I knew we were pretty good coming in."
Cottonwood was fourth at 248 and Murray finished fifth at 253. Fremont was sixth at 274, one shot ahead of Brighton.
"We had a feeling we could be in the thick of things," said Garner. "Then Carly, she shot a career-best round."
The Lakers were led by Ulibarii's 71, which tied for second place individually. Daines followed with an 87 and Dotson posted an 88. Jordy Warren (110) was Bonneville's fourth.
"Once we learned there would be a playoff for second, the girls said, 'Hey, we got this, let's go play,' " Garner said. "That's really all we did today. We just wanted to go out and play."
In another mild upset, the individual title went to Tooele's Sadie Palmer, who shot a career-best 4-under-par 68.
The senior who will play for Southern Utah next season, couldn't stop giggling during a post-round interview.
"That was easily my best and it could have been better," Palmer said with a huge grin. "I've never shot in the 60s before. I've never even sniffed it.
"I had just two bad holes today," she said.
Palmer posted a double bogey on the par 5 13th hole after hitting twice out of a green-side bunker and lipping out a pair of putts.
Palmer's first nine holes were spectacular. She shot a 4-under-par 32 on the front, which included an eagle at No. 8. She hit driver, 4-iron to about 20 feet and knocked down the putt.
Syracuse's Amanda Snyder tied for second at 1-under-par 71. Weber's Tara Green tied for fourth with Vines at 73.
Comments
For your information, the Davis Park layout is set at par-72 for the women's tees. One of the par-4s for men is set as a par-5.
How about posting the complete standing for individuals so we can see how individual girls ranked
The Davis Park course is a par 71 so you need to correct your numbers on how many under par the girsl shot...
