Wildcats release men's basketball schedule for 2008-2009

OGDEN -- Weber State University men's basketball coach Randy Rahe unveiled his 2008-09 schedule Thursday, with the Wildcats facing teams from 10 different conferences with a possible meeting against two PAC-10 powerhouses.

"Our goal every year is to put together a challenging schedule, and this year we have done just that," said Rahe. "Like always, we are excited about out instate games with BYU, Southern Utah, Utah and Utah State. These are great games, against great teams and great for our fans."

The Wildcats begin the season at the CBE Tournament in Los Angeles, California on Nov. 12-13 hosted by UCLA. It is the same tournament the Wildcats played in last season. The first round opponent is still undetermined but a win in that game would most likely mean a match up with the UCLA Bruins coached by former Weber State standout Ben Howland.

The Wildcats have a home-and-home series with Long Beach State beginning on Nov. 22 at Long Beach. The 49ers come to the Dee Events Center on Dec. 11 for a 6 p.m. tip-off. The early tip is to help accommodate a change in venue for the 2008 WSU Winter graduation ceremonies to be held the next day inside the Dee Center.

Long Beach State was the first opponent to play Weber State at the Dee Events Center when it opened in 1977-78. WSU won the game 99-96 in overtime.

After a Nov. 25 road trip to Utah State, the Wildcats return home to face Montana Tech on Nov. 29 and the BYU Cougars on Dec. 3, followed by a road trip to Cedar City to meet the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Dec. 13.

On Dec. 17, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos makes their first-ever appearance in the Dee Events Center. The Wildcats will make the return visit to Santa Barbara in 2009-2010.

A stretch of four straight road games, in nine days, in December will give the Wildcats a stern test beginning with a road trip to Utah on Dec. 20, followed by the Southern Mississippi Tournament on Dec. 22 and 23 in Biloxi, Miss. The Wildcats play Texas-Pan American the first night and a first-ever meeting with Southern Miss the second night. Southern Miss is coached by former Idaho and Utah State head coach, Larry Eustachy.

That stretch concludes with a game at the University of Arizona in Tucson on Dec. 29. It is the first meeting between the two schools since the 1969-70 season.

"Every game will be tough, but this presents a good challenge for our team to prepare them for Big Sky Conference play," Rahe said. "I really believe this schedule will help our young team grow and mature as long as we find a way to have some success."

The Wildcats open the 2008-09 Big Sky Conference season at home on Jan. 3 hosting Northern Colorado and concludes with a March 3 game at Montana State. The first round of the Big Sky Conference postseason tournament is set for Saturday, March 7 with the semifinals and finals slated for March 10-11 at the site of the regular season winner.
