By JASEN ASAYWith the playoff race tightening up in the MLS Western Conference, a road win tonight by Real Salt Lake could put the team closer to its first-ever playoff berth.
RSL (8-8-6) sits in second place, however the five teams behind RSL are all within five points, including tonight's opponent the Los Angeles Galaxy (6-9-7).
While RSL is just 1-8-1 on the road this season, the team has gained some momentum with a league win over the Colorado Rapids last week and another victory over U.A.N.L. Tigres in an international friendly on Wednesday.
"We're going to go there with a mentality that we want all the points that are available in that match," said RSL coach Jason Kreis. "We will just go there and hopefully continue what now is starting to be a little bit of a roll for us."
RSL will be without midfielder Andy Williams, who is gone on national team duty with Jamaica for World Cup qualifiers today and next week. However the Galaxy will be missing four starters -- including Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis, who are with the U.S. National team, and David Beckham, who is representing England this weekend - and that is something RSL would like to take advantage of tonight.
"The main thing, even without their guys, it won't be easy," said RSL captain Kyle Beckerman. "They'll throw everything at us because it's crunch time now. They're in need of a win at home so it's going to be really tough. But we feel with those guys in the lineup or out of it that we can get a win, so we just need to go out there with our guns blazing and really try and get three points out of it. It's a big opportunity for us."
