Smith rewrites history book

By JASEN ASAY

POCATELLO -- Just like every other time reporters ask Trevyn Smith about his latest accomplishment, Weber State's junior running back quickly turned the conversation to his team.

"To me it was just seven more points on the board," Smith said when asked about his 41-yard touchdown on Saturday. "It felt good but it was just one more step."

But that specific run during Weber State's 59-27 win over Idaho State rewrote history. On that play Smith broke WSU's all-time rushing record of 3,593 yards, set by Nick Chournos, and officially became the Wildcats' top runner.

After the game, Smith was more concerned that the No. 9-ranked Wildcats (9-2, 7-0 Big Sky) had just earned a spot in the FCS playoffs and would have rather talked about that.

"We've put so much work in, so it's awesome that all the work paid off," Smith said.

The play did not look like anything special at first as Smith took the pitch from Cameron Higgins and looked for room to get around the right side. But then WSU offensive lineman J.C. Oram cleared the path for Smith by knocking a Bengal defender out of the way and Smith ran for his third touchdown of the day.

"J.C. always has huge blocks," said Smith, who came into the game needing 121 yards to break the record. "J.C. had a huge block and Justin Schwartzbauer had a huge block on their corner to spring it."

As Smith jogged across the field to the sidelines where his teammates eagerly awaited to congratulate him, the public address announcer told the crowd of 5,514 that Smith had just become Weber State's all-time leading rusher. That announcement caused a loud cheer to come from the section of WSU fans that made the trip.

Smith, who now has 3,616 career rushing yards in a Wildcat uniform, racked up 143 yards on the ground and caught a team-high seven passes for 86 yards against the Bengals. With one more season, Smith could extend the all-time rushing record to a mark that will be difficult to match.

"It just seems like he is getting better and better," said WSU assistant coach and defensive coordinator Kevin Clune. "I don't know how you would defend against him."

Luckily for the Wildcats, they do not have to find an answer to that question.
