Crusaders march into hoops play

By Justin Johnson

RIVERDALE -- While it will show up as a loss, the Christian Heritage girls basketball squad will take plenty away from Wednesday's season-opening loss to Meridian.

The Mongoose held off several Crusaders' charges to earn a 51-45 victory. The game tipped of the 1-A basketball season.

Christian Heritage trailed for much of the game, but rallied to tie the game at 33 in the third period. In the final quarter, the Crusaders got to within two points on a couple of occasions, but Meridian fast-break baskets stalled the comeback.

Daniella Langston and Kaylie Dastrup paced Meridian with 14 points each.

Melissa Mix scored 22 points, including a 12-of-17 effort at the free-throw line, to lead Christian Heritage. Candace Fairman added 12 points, while several young Crusaders also stepped up in their first varsity experience.
