Warriors sneak past 'Stangs

By RYAN WILKINSON

Fuller hits from free throw linein final quarter

PLEASANT VIEW -- A little poise goes a long way. Just ask Carson Fuller and the rest of Weber High School's basketball team.

Battling a physical Mountain Crest team Thursday night, the Warriors sank 17-of-23 free throws in the fourth quarter to break away and clinch a 54-44 win at Richard R. Conolly Gym.

Fuller, a 6-foot-1 guard, connected on 10-of-11 free throws in the final period and buried a 3-pointer with just under four minutes to play that helped break the Warriors out of a deadlocked game with the Mustangs.

"It feels good to pick up our first win. Mountain Crest is a real tough, physical team, and we know it's going to be a battle every time," Fuller said.

Of course, Fuller had some help on both sides of the ball. Senior forward Hawken Rashid dropped in 10 points for Weber by halftime and finished with 16, second only to Fuller's 22-point effort.

Dallin Adams, a junior guard, added four steals and 10 points for the Warriors, who spent about half the game in some type of full-court defense and held Mountain Crest to just 29 percent shooting from the field (16-of-55), including a miserable 2-for-14 performance (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

"If they don't score they don't win, so we try and be a shutdown defense," Fuller said. "We're a defensive-minded team, and luckily tonight we were able to hold (Mountain Crest) down."

Despite their poor shooting, the Mustangs kept things close until the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter when a basket from Rashid started a devastating 10-point run that included Fuller's late 3.

Weber notched 26 points in the final period, nearly matching the 28 points it scored in the previous three quarters.

Mountain Crest was led by senior forward Chandler Smith, who scored 16 points and collected six rebounds in the losing effort.
