Weber State women let lead slip away
By JUSTIN JOHNSONOGDEN -- Claire Faucher is no secret to the Big Sky Conference.
That doesn't make her any less efficient.
The junior point guard splashed in a game-high 20 points, guiding Portland State back from an 11-point first half deficit to a 76-63 road victory over the Weber State University women's basketball team on Thursday night at the Dee Events Center.
"We love to get out and run the transition game," Faucher said. "We can play slower, but we like the faster pace. This has always been a tough place for us and we got down big early, so we really had to fight back to get this one."
Faucher finished her 30-minute night with 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, including four 3-pointers, along with six rebounds and three assists. And it wasn't just the fact that she scored that was important, many came at critical points during the game that allowed the Vikings to pull ahead and then pull away.
Weber State junior point guard Tonya Schnibbe led the Wildcats with 17 points and eight assists, while Caitlin Anderson added 12 points and seven rebounds. Sarah Conner, returning to the court from injury, had 10 points.
"We had good effort and good intensity," Weber State coach Carla Taylor said. "I can't fault that. Portland State got a big lift out off their bench. They were the better team."
Weber State rolled out early, taking a 15-4 lead on a layup by Schnibbe early in the first half. The Wildcats led 21-12 at the midpoint of the half, but the Vikings responded with a 13-0 surge that put them ahead to stay.
"We've still got some things we need to clean up," Taylor said. "We're getting better and getting there. We had opportunities and didn't take advantage of them, Portland State had opportunities and they did, and that's the difference in the game."
Weber State returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Wildcats host Eastern Washington.
