 lead sports-college story

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State has agreed to three-year contract extensions for head basketball coaches Brad Huse and Tricia Binford.

Athletics director Peter Fields said Monday that the coaches are committed to building programs the right way and the contract extensions show the university's commitment to them. He says the teams are successful on the court and in the classroom.

Binford's teams have a 49-66 record in four seasons and have advanced to the Big Sky Conference tournament the past three seasons. Huse is 40-51 in three seasons at MSU and the Bobcat men advanced to the league championship game last season.

Players didn't question Bear Bryant's authority back in the day

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Thirty of Paul "Bear" Bryant's former University of Kentucky football players gathered in June at The Campbell House for their annual reunion to slap backs, catch up with friends, tell stories and do the expected general reminiscing about their old college days. Bear's Boys. "We're getting up there," said Ed Hamilton, who played during the 1949-51 seasons and scored a touchdown in the 1952 Cotton Bowl. "Not many of us left."

Basketball should reign again in ACC

Basketball should reign again in ACC

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The dominance of men's basketball in ACC athletics can be measured by how thoroughly the sport has ruled the league's athlete-of-the-year awards. Of the previous 54 male winners, 31 have been basketball players. And, technically, that count could be misleading because Florida State's Charlie Ward, who starred in football and basketball, won in 1993 and '94.

Big 12 appears ready to surpass SEC in football

Fifteen years after its creation, the Big 12 stands on the brink of fulfilling all the great expectations predicted at its birth. Back in February 1994, the combination of the Big Eight and many of the top programs from the Southwest Conference seemed like great football synergy. Texas. Oklahoma. Nebraska. Texas A&M. Colorado. While the conference has been more than competitive since its inception -- producing three outright or shared national champions since it began play in 1996 -- its best may be directly ahead.

Wallace: Sports traditionalism a vanishing act

I'm a sports traditionalist.  When I was a child, I adopted my favorite sports teams -- the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Vikings and University of Iowa Hawkeyes -- and I haven't wavered since, through all of the heartache that Steve Bartman, Gary Anderson, the Atlanta Falcons and Steve Alford have caused me.

Kantowski: NCAA stubbornness a sure bet

LAS VEGAS -- Now that it has been officially announced that the Western Athletic Conference will join the West Coast Conference in holding its men's and women's postseason basketball tournaments at the Orleans Arena, I figure it's only a matter of time until the Big Sky Conference announces that it, too, will move its hoops shindig to Las Vegas. In addition to the WCC and WAC, the Mountain West Conference recently had the good sense to renew its contract with the Thomas & Mack Center. That means that over a 10-day period in March 2011 (provided the WCC renews its agreement at the Orleans, which should be a slam dunk) you'll be able to see six No. 8 seeds get eliminated and their fans try to unload tournament passes on the concourse for a fraction of what they paid for them.
