FARMINGTON — Nathanael Sloop’s attorneys plan to challenge Shelby’s Law, which allows prosecutors to go after the death penalty when a child dies from either neglect or abuse.

“Shelby’s Law allows for the death penalty for an unintentional killing,” said Richard Mauro, defense attorney for Sloop.

Mauro and Scott Williams spoke with the media after the preliminary hearing held Friday for Sloop in 2nd District Court.

What do you do in an earthquake? Great ShakeOut provides answers

SOUTH WEBER — Though she was merely 2 years old at the time, Nicole Sargent remembers being in an earthquake.

“Our family was in Chile visiting one of my dad’s friends, and I remember it happened while we were sleeping,” said the South Weber Elementary School fifth-grader. “The next morning, my mom said we couldn’t go outside until they said it was safe.”

On Wednesday, Nicole and her classmates practiced the drop, cover and hold earthquake drill with the rest of the state, as part of The Great Utah ShakeOut.

Top of Utah ski resorts report good season

Snow resorts are closed despite the new fresh snow arriving this week.

Meanwhile, orchards in the Weber, Box Elder and Davis counties are safe from freezing just for a few more days.

“We had a great season,” said Gregg Greer, general manager of Powder Mountain.

Even though the snowfall was a little short of an average year, more people came out to ski the slopes this season, Greer said.

Hundreds gather for Ogden Climbing Festival

OGDEN — Layla Tanner eased nimble fingers into barely visible cracks and crevices in a multi-ton boulder. The Ogden resident lifted her full weight with her fingertips, then raised her left foot to feel for a subtle foot-hold in the stone.

After a few false starts, she lifted her body atop The Tooth, as the giant rock in the Ogden Boulder Field is known. Standing victorious, Layla surveyed all of the Ogden metro area below, and the western horizon far beyond.

“Climbing makes me feel powerful,” said Layla, only 15. “It’s not like any other sport. Anyone can play soccer. Rock climbing is solving problems on your own, without help from any teammates. Making it to the top makes me feel strong.”
