Arkansas’ Smith files Chapter 7 bankruptcy

 

 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas coach John L. Smith filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition Thursday for debts he incurred through real estate investments in Kentucky.

 

Smith told The Associated Press in July he expected to make the filing but also was trying to avoid it.

Autopsy: Death of handcuffed man in Ark. a suicide

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An autopsy report released Monday lists the death of a man shot in the head while his hands were cuffed behind him in an Arkansas patrol car as a suicide.

The state crime lab report, signed by three medical examiners, said the muzzle of a gun was placed against the right side of 21-year-old Chavis Carter’s head when it was fired. Jonesboro police released the report to The Associated Press and other news organizations under a Freedom of Information Act request.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — John L. Smith always believed real estate development was the safest investment of all, saying "you may not make money, but you won’t lose money."

The Arkansas coach has had to rethink that philosophy in recent years after several of his land deals went bust in Kentucky. Smith told The Associated Press that he is making plans to declare bankruptcy, perhaps during the upcoming season.

"There have been some sleepless nights trying to get this resolved," Smith said.
