CLINTON -- Derek Davis traveled to Arkansas with his father and grandfather earlier this month just hoping to represent Utah well on the national competitive bass fishing scene.
He did that -- and a whole lot more.
Davis, 14, of Clinton, beat out more than 80 other competitors to bring home The Bass Federation's 2011 National Guard Junior World Championship title. On Aug. 12, he pulled a total catch of six pounds, one ounce out of DeGray Lake near Arkadelphia, Ark. to win the western region title. He followed that up with a total of 10 pounds, 14 ounces the next day to secure the overall victory in the 11-14 age group.
Not too shabby for a national debut.
