ATK rocket motor supports successful Antares test flight

ARLINGTON, Va. — ATK announced Sunday that its CASTOR 30 upper stage solid rocket motor supported the successful test flight of Orbital Sciences Corporation’s Antares launch vehicle with the Cygnus mass simulator payload. The test flight took place at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Sunday.

“This is a great day for the Antares team,” said Scott Lehr, vice president and general manager of ATK’s Defense and Commercial Division, in a news release.

“We congratulate Orbital for a successful test flight (Sunday). ATK is proud to be a part of their Antares team,” Lehr said, adding that ATK is looking forward to helping Orbital carry out its first cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station later this year.

Texas residents start to rebuild after tornadoes

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Amid preliminary estimates that an EF-2 tornado might have touched down in southwest Arlington on Tuesday, city officials Wednesday switched to recovery mode, allowing homeowners back into devastated neighborhoods, setting up a help center, and warning residents about shady contractors.

An estimated 428 homes were damaged when winds estimated at 135 mph roared through shortly after lunch, officials said.

Tornadoes destroy homes in Dallas area; no deaths

ARLINGTON, Texas — The tornado hurtled toward the nursing home. Physical therapist Patti Gilroy said she saw the swirling mass barreling down through the back door, after she herded patients into the hallway in the order trained: walkers, wheelchairs, then beds.

EX-BEES REPORT: Angels' Trumbo is sticking with what works

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The slow pace of Kendrys Morales' rehabilitation from a broken ankle this spring allowed rookie Mark Trumbo to win some unexpected playing time at first base.

But now that Morales is officially done for the season, Trumbo doesn't plan to change anything.

"I'm not going to approach it any differently," he said. "All along I never knew quite where he was at, but it never seemed that he was knocking on the doorstep. It's nice that I'll get a few more chances, but I'm going to do exactly the same thing I have been doing."

Pregame speeches have evolved since Vince Lombardi's fiery talks

DALLAS -- Vince Lombardi motivated his 1960s Packers with fire-and-brimstone speeches. His powerful all-or-nothing messages inspired the Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls.

Before Super Bowl XLV on Sunday at Cowboys Stadium, the Packers will hear from hired hand Kevin Elko, an acclaimed motivational speaker who previously worked for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the other team fighting for the Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl is our national mid-winter festival

ARLINGTON, Texas -- This is why the Super Bowl matters.

It's Patti and Roy Asmus of Rosendale, Wis., plunking down $5,000 apiece for a trip to the big game. They're Green Bay Packers fans, with a love of team passed down through the generations.

"My parents were at the Ice Bowl in 1967," says Patti Asmus, a schoolteacher. "It seems only fitting we would do this. It's in our blood."

Sunshine appears as a light snow continues to fall on traffic manuevering through ice and snow Friday in Dallas. Another blast of winter weather slammed Dallas with up to 5 inches of snow Friday, making driving hazardous and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights as tens of thousands of football fans descended on the city for the Super Bowl.

Storm turns some Super Bowl plans into Super Mess

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Runways too snowy to receive airliners packed with football fans. Sidewalks too icy for cowboy boots. Temperatures too cold to distinguish Dallas from Pittsburgh or Green Bay.
