World champ at 17: U.S. teen Shiffrin rushes to gold

SCHLADMING, Austria — Mikaela Shiffrin might as well be dancing or flying.

That’s what skiing is like for the American teenager these days. The victories and milestones keep piling up, fortifying a U.S. team that is without Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller.

A day after Ted Ligety became the first man to win three gold medals at a world championships in 45 years, Shiffrin became the youngest woman in 39 years to win the slalom title Saturday.

With third gold at worlds, Utah's Ted Ligety joins ski legends

SCHLADMING, Austria — Ted Ligety has joined some of skiing’s legends. And in doing so, the American catapulted himself into the sport’s biggest spotlight heading into next year’s Sochi Olympics.

By winning Friday’s giant slalom by a massive margin, Ligety became the first man in 45 years to win three gold medals at a skiing world championships — since French great Jean-Claude Killy took home four golds in 1968.

“I still don’t think I recognize what I’ve done this week,” Ligety said. “It’s just been so phenomenal to win three gold medals, especially in two events that I hadn’t won in before.”

Utah's Ted Ligety wins second gold medal of worlds for USA

SCHLADMING, Austria — American Ted Ligety already has two gold medals at the world championships, and he hasn’t even skied his best event yet.

Ligety won the super-combined title Monday with a superb downhill and an equally impressive night slalom run under the lights on the icy Planai course, for a two-run time of 2 minutes, 56.96 seconds.

Even without Vonn, U.S. has plenty of medal chances

SCHLADMING, Austria — One year from the Sochi Olympics, there’s no Lindsey Vonn or Bode Miller competing in the downhill at the world championships.

They’re out of action with injuries — Vonn crashed and will need knee surgery, while Miller is recovering from surgery — but the U.S. Ski Team still has plenty of skiers capable of winning medals.

Start with Julia Mancuso. She already won a bronze in super-G, could be a threat in Friday’s super-combined and seeks her first podium of the season in Sunday’s women’s downhill.

SCHLADMING, Austria — With Lindsey Vonn injured and Bode Miller already out for the season, it’s Ted Ligety’s turn to lead the U.S. ski team.

The timing was not lost on the Park City native.

Vonn not clear favorite in super-G at worlds

SCHLADMING, Austria — This year, Lindsey Vonn isn’t the only favorite in the super-G at the world skiing championships.

The American has won the World Cup super-G title for four straight seasons, but Vonn is only now regaining speed after a mid-season break to shrug off health problems. Several rivals have been showing the kind of form that could earn them the gold medal in Tuesday’s opening race.

Skier Ligety gains speed in super-G before worlds

KITZBUEHEL, Austria — Right in time for the Alpine skiing world championships, Ted Ligety has regained his speed in super-G — on a hill that hasn’t suited him in the past.

The American placed sixth in Friday’s race at Kitzbuehel, Austria, to bounce back from a disappointing showing at Val Gardena, Italy, where he finished 25th last month.

In four previous starts, Ligety had never been better than 22nd in the Austrian resort. His best result came 12 days before the super-G at the world championships, the first men’s race at the event in Schladming, Austria.

“I am overwhelmed, extremely happy and excited,” McKennis said. “It’s definitely a dream come true.”

The four-time overall champion is among the 65 racers who appear on the start list for training that was released by governing body FIS late Wednesday.
