DHAKA, Bangladesh -- A seamstress buried in the wreckage of a collapsed garment factory building for 17 days was rescued Friday, a miraculous moment set against a scene of unimaginable horror, where the death toll shot past 1,000.

14 dead after Islamist riots in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Clashes between police and members of an Islamic group demanding the introduction of blasphemy laws left 14 people dead and 250 wounded in Dhaka and surrounding districts.

Police in combat gear patrolled the capital while armored vehicles were stationed in the main business district, footage from local television stations showed. Streets were littered with burned tires and broken bricks.

Death toll tops 200 in building collapse

SAVAR, Bangladesh -- "Save us, brother. I beg you, brother," Mohammad Altab moaned to the rescuers who could not help him. He had been trapped for more than 24 hours, pinned between slabs of concrete in the ruins of the garment factory building where he worked.

Garmet factory building collapses killing 87

 

SAVAR, Bangladesh -- An eight-story building housing several garment factories collapsed near Bangladesh's capital Wednesday morning, killing at least 87 people and trapping many more in a jumbled mess of shattered concrete and bricks, officials said.

Searchers look for more victims of Bangladesh fire

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- Firefighters searched a gutted garment factory Wednesday for more possible victims of a devastating fire that trapped workers and forced some to jump to their deaths. At least 29 fatalities were reported.

No more bodies were immediately found, said Nilufar Yasmine, a fire department official.

She said officials were still investigating the cause of Tuesday's blaze.

25 killed in Bangladesh factory blaze

DHAKA, Bangladesh -- A devastating blaze raced through a garment factory near Bangladesh's capital on Tuesday, killing at least 25 people and injuring more than 100, witnesses and news reports said.

Fire official Golam Mostafa said the fire started in a 10-story factory owned by local business giant Hameem Group in the Ashulia industrial zone, just outside Dhaka. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, and the government ordered an investigation.
