Romney wins in N.H., Huntsman finishes third

CONCORD, N.H. -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night, adding to a first-place finish in last week's Iowa caucuses and establishing himself as the man to beat for the Republican presidential nomination. Ron Paul finished second, with Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum trailing.

GOP rivals target Romney 2 days before N.H. primary

CONCORD, N.H. -- Mitt Romney's Republican presidential rivals piled on the criticism Sunday, two days before New Hampshire's primary, with a combative Newt Gingrich leading the aggression by accusing the GOP front-runner of "pious baloney" and charging him with hiding behind inaccurate attack ads aired by allies.

Rick Perry bashes the GOP debates

CONCORD, N.H. -- One week after yet another disappointing performance in a national debate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said the whole experience has been a mistake.

Speaking on Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's talk show Tuesday night, Perry said the debates "are set up for nothing more than to tear down the candidates."

Retirees starting to protest at GOP campaign stops

CONCORD. N.H. -- This campaign season, Republican presidential candidates and New Hampshire's congressmen have been met by groups of old folks carrying signs and making their voices heard on maintaining programs like Social Security and Medicare. Texas Gov. Rick Perry got an earful at a protest in Portsmouth on Aug. 18, and a group gathered outside a Mitt Romney town hall event in Lebanon last week.

Behind much of the activity is the Alliance for Retired Americans, a national advocacy group launched in New Hampshire in 2007. The alliance itself was founded by the AFL-CIO in 2001, spokesman Michael Buckley said Monday from its Washington headquarters.

Romney shifting campaign into a higher gear

CONCORD, N.H. — Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is shifting into a higher gear.

The former Massachusetts governor, who leads national and state polls in the race for the GOP nomination, has spent much of the year laying low, limiting his public appearances and rarely weighing in on the national debate.

That started changing Monday as Romney visited New Hampshire just as the most important week yet in the Republican race got under way. A nationally televised debate was set for Thursday, two days ahead of a test vote by Iowa Republicans and an expected announcement by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is likely to enter the race.

Huntsman building big NH team, changing tone

CONCORD, N.H. -- Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman wants to go head to head with Mitt Romney in the former Massachusetts governor's own backyard.

With a laser focus on New Hampshire, President Barack Obama's recently departed ambassador to China is quietly assembling what may end up being the largest paid GOP primary effort in the state's history. He's also taking a sharper tone as he fights to overcome a staff shakeup and low popularity among the relatively few Republican voters who know him.
