State investigating Clinton veterinary hospital after dog’s bloody death

CLINTON — The state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing has opened an investigation into the death of a 13-month-old English mastiff, Athena, who died following a spay procedure at Quail Pointe Veterinary Hospital, says a Salt Lake City attorney representing the dog’s owner, Summer Thatcher.

“Great news for Athena and other owners concerned about the activity of the veterinarians at Quail Pointe. (DOPL) has opened an active investigation,” Salt Lake City attorney Paul Lydolph III told the Standard Examiner in an email.

Because of the actions of hospital staff, Thatcher claims, Athena bled out and died April 9 within an hour of leaving the Clinton animal hospital where a spay procedure was performed on her pet.

Harry Houdini would be proud.

A 35-year-old man handcuffed and left in the back of a police cruiser Saturday somehow managed to slip his cuffs, squeeze through a small opening in a partition and disappear by stealing the car — leading officers on a chase by vehicle and foot that resulted in his capture hours later.

Therapist: Lagoon's ‘Terroride’ a trigger for sex offenders

FARMINGTON — Horror props in the Lagoon Terroride are reminiscent of a 1960s Vincent Price film, not something that amusement park officials would consider to be offensive.

Despite that, Lagoon officials are willing to sit down with an Ogden marriage and family therapist to discuss his concerns with a stunt in the haunted house he claims has aroused behavior in his clients, and more importantly, depicts “sexual violence against women.”

Hikers need to help themselves to avoid rescues, officials say

Each year, as weather in the Top of Utah warms and the last snow melts, hikers begin leaving the state’s urban areas to trek into the outdoors.

Unfortunately, some of these hikers will become injured, overestimate their hiking ability or embark into the wilderness ill prepared — keeping search and rescue teams hard at work, said Weber County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Toll.

With 67 hiker-related search and rescue callouts from 2004 to 2013 — making up approximately 75 percent of all rescue operations in that time — incidents involving hikers are not uncommon in Weber County.

Top of Utah volunteers donate time, equipment for rescues

Utah taxpayers and volunteers foot the majority of the bill when it comes to finding lost or injured hikers.

When hikers or their family calls 911, help comes from law enforcement, search and rescue teams and medical emergency personnel.

The cost of a search could range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on the location, the number of searchers, hours involved, the equipment used and whether transportation to a hospital is needed, officials said.
