Draper connects open spaces with tunnel

DRAPER -- Salt Lake County officials opened a tunnel under Traverse Ridge Road that connects thousands of acres of open space around Draper's Corner Canyon.

Police identify Marriott-Slaterville worker who died in Draper

DRAPER — Police here have identified Thayne Hansen, 52, as the man who died Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle while at work.

Hansen, of Marriott-Slaterville, was working in a storm drain when a driver pulled into a parking lot near 150 E. 11950 South in Draper and struck him, said Draper Police Sgt. Pat Evans.

Hansen was taken to a local hospital, where he died later that day.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Hatch defends record at GOP debate

DRAPER -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch faced off against two key opponents Wednesday night in his bid for a seventh term as he participated in his first debate ahead of this month’s state Republican convention.

The debate in Draper, attended by 1,400 people, touched on topics ranging from potential military base closures to federal land control but returned repeatedly to the increasing federal debt and growing entitlement programs.

SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge has halted the firing squad execution of a 50-year-old man convicted of torturing and murdering a Utah college student in 1988.

Board: Ogden serial rapist Higgins to remain in prison for life

DRAPER — The State Board of Pardons has decided that prison will keep Ogden serial rapist Jason Brett Higgins, assigning him natural life status less than a week after his first parole hearing.

“The board has ordered that Jason Brett Higgins, age 38, (will) spend the rest of his life in prison,” board spokesman Jim Hatch said in a brief news release issued late Monday afternoon.

Serial rapist appears before parole board

DRAPER — The hearing officer for serial rapist Jason Brett Higgins won’t be recommending his release.

Higgins, 38, has served 14 years in prison since he terrorized the Ogden area in 1996 and 1997.

Don Blanchard was the hearing officer for Higgins’ first parole hearing, held Tuesday morning.

Officials say death of teen along Jordan River not a random attack

DRAPER — After the body of a teen girl was found in the Jordan River on Sunday and although there have been assaults on joggers along river trails in other parts of the state, an official says the most recent incident does not seem to be a random attack.

DRAPER — Police on Monday identified a teen whose body was found in the Jordan River and said her death is being investigated as a suspicious.
