Fruit Heights prepares new nature trail

FRUIT HEIGHTS — In a forest gully just north of Castle Heights Park off Nichols Road are the remnants of an old park and campground. Once a popular recreation area, massive flooding in 1983 demolished the park, leaving in its wake a solemn trail of damaged trees.

There are still signs of a disjointed trail under the tree rubble and crumbled pieces of asphalt along the streambed, but Fruit Heights is breathing new life into the area. Since last fall, the city has been actively preparing the area for a new trail system, hoping to have it in place by the end of summer.

Steve Petty, Fruit Heights Trails Committee chairman, said the projected milelong trail will begin at Main Street in Kaysville and head up to the area behind Castle Heights Park, where it will branch off into a loop and continue up to U.S. 89.

Utah congressmen seek transfer of forest service land to Fruit Heights for cemetery

FRUIT HEIGHTS — Deep in the 100-acre woods is where Fruit Heights residents may lie — permanently.

Utah’s congressional representatives have introduced legislation that would transfer 100 acres of U.S. Forest Service land on the Davis County bench to Fruit Heights for use as a cemetery.

Fruit Heights currently has an agreement with neighboring Kaysville for burials, but because of the area’s significant population growth, the city has been notified its residents soon will no longer be able to be buried in the Kaysville cemetery.

Davis mayors consider whether to run for re-election; two out for sure

CLEARFIELD — For a variety of reasons, several Davis mayors are toying with getting out of the political game this year, with Clearfield Mayor Don Wood and Bountiful Mayor Joe Johnson having already shared with their fellow council members that they will not be seeking re-election this fall.

Wood, who also serves as the vice chairman for the Davis Board of Health, said it is his and his wife’s goal to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

But even if that goal isn’t met, Wood said, having served 10 years in municipal government — two of those years as a councilman and eight years as mayor — is enough.
