Bear River's Summers earns 2012 All-Area MVP honors

GARLAND — By summer’s end, Morgan Summers will be sporting a gold ring on each finger of her right hand.

Ah, the life of a four-time state 3-A softball champion.

“I don’t like to lose,” said the 17-year-old Summers. “I was lucky to be part of great teams for four years. All of the state titles at Bear River were a highlight. Winning never gets old, and I’m a sore loser.”

Prep softball: Bears move on with shutout

GARLAND -- The drive for five may not be a smooth ride.

No school has swept five consecutive state softball titles. Bingham (1991-94) and Da Bears (2008-11) each have won four.

Three-time defending Region 11 champion Bear River took its first step toward a five-peat Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of North Sanpete in the state 3-A playoffs.

Prep softball: Bears' Theurer blanks Warriors

GARLAND -- She is still not 100 percent, but the Jordan Theurer who pitched Monday was far different than the one who threw Friday versus Box Elder.

Theurer, a junior right-hander, became the first pitcher to blank the Warriors this season. She scattered four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in a 2-0 non-league whitewash of Region 1 champion Weber High.

Prep sports: Bees, Bears tune up for run at softball championship

GARLAND -- It is always sweet to upend your crosscounty rival, but the Bees have bigger fish to catch.

Box Elder, chasing the Region 5 softball title along with Roy High, tangles with Bonneville and the defending state 5-A champion Royals next week on the road.

"I'm excited for next week. It's always fun to play Bonneville and Roy," said Bees junior right-hander Baylee Reeves. "We always have them at the end (of the season). We want to win that league title."

Prep softball: Bear River cruises to region title

GARLAND -- The Bears captured their third straight Region 11 title Wednesday, blanking Ben Lomond 17-0 in a three-inning whitewash.

In sweeping the season series, four-time defending state 3-A champion Bear River outscored the winless Scots 36-zip.
