Tina Maze wins slalom, takes over discipline lead from Shiffrin

OFTERSCHWANG, Germany — Overall champion Tina Maze of Slovenia beat Mikaela Shiffrin in a World Cup slalom Sunday to overtake the American teenager in the discipline standings and close in on becoming the first woman to win five crystal globes in a season.

Maze also got a piece of another record in a season where she has already broken several, equaling Austrian great Hermann Maier’s mark of 22 World Cup podiums in 1999-2000. The Slovenian earlier broke Maier’s record for points in a season, and she extended her total to 2,254 with her 10th win.

Pope begins state visit to Germany

BERLIN -- Pope Benedict XVI warned Germans of the danger of ignoring religion as he began the first state visit to his homeland Thursday, seeking to stem the tide of Catholics leaving the church while acknowledging the damage caused by the clerical sex abuse scandal.

He is expected to be greeted by large protests and a boycott by some lawmakers when he addresses parliament later in the day but also by larger crowds of Catholic faithful.

Wambach lifts U.S. to final in 3-1 win over France

 

MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany -- The U.S. kept its fans breathless again. And just like last time, Abby Wambach -- who else -- came up big.

Wambach broke a tense tie with a thunderous header in the 79th minute, and the U.S. earned its first trip to the World Cup final since winning it in 1999 with a 3-1 victory over France on Wednesday.

"We've achieved part of our goal. We're in the final," Wambach said. "We want to complete it. We want to be world champs."

Women's World Cup: Cheney, Buehler score as U.S. beats North Korea 2-0

 

DRESDEN, Germany -- Lauren Cheney and Rachel Buehler scored in the second half Tuesday as the United States won 2-0 against North Korea in its opening match at the women's World Cup.

Cheney scored in the 54th minute, taking a long cross from Abby Wambach right in front of the box and nodding the ball past goalkeeper Hong Myong Hui to set off a raucous celebration by the two-time World Cup champions.

Buehler hit the second goal of her career with a thunderous right-footed strike from 11 yards in the 76th minute. Hong dived, but the ball rolled beneath her outstretched hand.
