Low bidder wins Harrisville storm drain project

Storm drains will be installed along 750 West.

The contract for the work has been awarded to B&K Fox Contractors and Associates on a bid of $48,406.

Public Works Director Gene Bingham said the city has worked with B&K Fox Contractors and Associates in the past, and he is excited to work with them again.

Auditor gives Harrisville positive review

The city received a positive audit review at a recent council meeting.

Jeff Ambrose of Crane, Christensen, Palmer & Associates said that the city’s finances are very healthy.

“The city has virtually no debt,” said Ambrose. “We don’t have any long-term debt here.”

Ambrose said that Harrisville is one of the few cities his firm audits that doesn’t have any debt.

Judicial and Building Inspections overspent by a combined $709, but other departments more than made up that amount with revenue.

Harrisville has new mayor pro tem

HARRISVILLE — Bruce Richins was appointed to be Harrisville’s new mayor pro tem.

Richins will serve as mayor pro tem for a one-year term.

The mayor pro tem acts as a replacement mayor should the mayor be unavailable, or as a provisional replacement should the mayor leave office mid-term.

City council revises alcohol ordinance

Harrisville -- The city council has passed an alcoholic beverage control ordinance.

Poor economy shutters two Harrisville restaurants

HARRISVILLE -- Two well-known Harrisville restaurants have closed.

Boccia's Pizza Bistro and Moore's Halibut House both closed their doors at the end of 2011.

Boccia's had been in business since 2001 and under current ownership since 2004. Nick VanArsdell, the restaurant's general manager, said that the overhead was too high and the restaurant wasn't able to turn enough of a profit to keep the business going.
