Actor Michael Clarke Duncan dies at 54

LOS ANGELES — Michael Clarke Duncan, the hulking, prolific character actor whose dozens of films included an Oscar-nominated performance as a death row inmate in “The Green Mile” and such other box office hits as “Armageddon,” “Planet of the Apes” and “Kung Fu Panda,” is dead at age 54.

Duncan died Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a heart attack, said his fiancee, reality TV personality Rev. Omarosa Manigault, in a statement released by publicist Joy Fehily.

The muscular, 6-foot-4 Duncan, a former bodyguard who turned to acting in his 30s, “suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered,” the statement said. “Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.”

LA pro tennis umpire charged with husband’s murder

LOS ANGELES — As an umpire for decades on some of tennis’s biggest stages, Lois Goodman mixed it up with John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, Roger Federer and the Williams Sisters.

Already in New York City for next week’s U.S. Open where she was to serve as a line judge, the 70-year-old Goodman was met Tuesday with a felony arrest warrant from her hometown of Los Angeles, where police and prosecutors say she beat her 80-year-old husband to death with a coffee mug in April.

Man arrested in Harvey Weinstein extortion plot

LOS ANGELES-Federal agents have arrested a man suspected of issuing death threats to a slew of business titans, including film mogul Harvey Weinstein, and demanding that they send millions to an offshore bank account.

The news was first reported by The Smoking Gun website.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Vivek Shah, an actor living in West Hollywood, was arrested on Aug. 10 at his parents’ house in Illinois.

Mars rover Curiosity prepares for test drive

LOS ANGELES — Scientists prepared to send Curiosity on its first test drive Wednesday over the billion-year-old rocks of Mars and said a busted wind sensor wouldn’t jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there.

Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., turned four of the rover’s six wheels in place this week in a successful “wheel wiggle” to test the steering for the short trek, mission manager Mike Watkins said.

Humorist Phyllis Diller dies at 95 in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95.

“She died peacefully in her sleep and with a smile on her face,” her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press.

Diller, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999, was found by her son, Perry Diller. The cause of her death has not been released.

'Top Gun' director left behind notes to loved ones

LOS ANGELES — Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as “Top Gun,” “Days of Thunder” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” died Sunday after jumping from a towering suspension bridge spanning Los Angeles harbor and leaving behind several notes to loved ones, authorities said.

The 68-year-old Scott’s death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner’s Lt. Joe Bale said.

“I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time,” Scott’s spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.

Ann Rutherford, actress in 'Gone With the Wind,' Andy Hardy movies, dies at 94

LOS ANGELES - Ann Rutherford, an actress whose small role as Scarlett's younger sister Carreen in the 1939 film "Gone With the Wind" was her most enduring, has died. She was 94.

Rutherford, who also portrayed Mickey Rooney's teenage girlfriend in the Andy Hardy movies, died Monday evening at her home in Beverly Hills, said her close friend and fellow actress Anne Jeffreys. Rutherford had been in declining health with heart problems.

As she became one of the last surviving cast members of "Gone With the Wind," Rutherford made a second career out of attending festivals featuring the beloved Civil War epic.

Whitey Bulger's girlfriend sentenced to 8 years in prison

LOS ANGELES - A federal judge sentenced the longtime girlfriend of reputed Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger to eight years in prison Tuesday and fined her $150,000 for helping "someone accused of the most serious crimes imaginable."

Catherine Greig, 61, showed no emotion in the Boston courtroom as U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock told her she had plenty of time during her 16 years in hiding to understand the seriousness of her actions, according to The Associated Press.

"We're all responsible for what we do," U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock told Greig, before an audience that included the families of some of Bulger's alleged victims, the Boston Globe reported. "We all make choices."
