Evans nabs State Amateur crown

MIDWAY -- Like a storm rolling across the Heber Valley, Cedar City golfer Jeff Evans overwhelmed his opponent early Sunday afternoon to win the 113th Utah State Amateur in convincing fashion.

Pushed to 21 holes twice on Saturday to advance past tough opponents at Soldier Hollow Golf Course's Gold Course, Evans got on a roll against Vernal's Stratton Schulz late in their opening 18 holes, and thoroughly dominated in the afternoon, winning the title with a lopsided 8 and 7 margin of victory.

Despain bows out in State Amateur quarterfinals

MIDWAY -- After 85 holes of golf this week, Nick Despain can't remember too many bad shots.

But when it comes to match play, it's all about the pressure you put on your opponent. And Saturday morning, in the Utah State Amateur quarterfinals, Despain was unable to put the pressure on opponent Greg Wojtkun and fell 3 and 2 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course.

"I never like losing; I'm sad about that. But I got outplayed today," Despain said. "I had three quick swings and couldn't put the pressure on him when I needed to."
