SALT LAKE CITY — A 22-year-old Utah man was killed trying to swing through the opening of a 110-foot-tall sandstone arch in a stunt made so popular on YouTube that state authorities recently banned the daredevil activity by commercial outfitters.

Kyle Lee Stocking, of West Jordan, left too much slack in the rope he was using, and it sent him crashing into the sandstone base of Corona Arch near Moab, Grand County sheriff’s officials said. He died Sunday afternoon.

Utah gets $900K grant for Moab pathway

 

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah is set to get $900,000 in federal funds for the construction of a pathway to connect Moab to surrounding national parks and public lands in the eastern part of the state.

Push is on to change name of Negro Bill Canyon near Moab

SALT LAKE CITY — Louis Williams cringes every time he tells Moab visitors the name of the canyon with the great hike to a stunning arch: Negro Bill Canyon.

Williams, a window cleaner who has lived in Moab for 14 years, is leading a renewed campaign to change the name of the Southern Utah canyon that he and others believe is inappropriate.

He has posted an online petition that has garnered more than 600 signatures and plans to submit a formal renaming application to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.

Utah unmasks film incentives; industry to boost economy

SALT LAKE CITY — The Governor’s Office of Economic Development has approved incentives for eight more films that plan to shoot in Utah.

That’s the largest number of films approved at once, although only one of the movies is a big-budget film poised to be a blockbuster.
