Prep basketball: Trojans lock up Region 11 title with blowout

MORGAN -- The Region 11 champion Trojans breezed to an easy 72-50 win over the last place Grantsville Cowboys Wednesday night in a game that was never close.

Morgan started the evening with a 13-1 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 30 points in the first half and 35 in the second before calling off the dogs. A 15-0 Grantsville run against Morgan's subs late in the fourth quarter made the score sound more respectable than the game actually was.

Jake Miles drilled four 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Trojans. Colby Skinner added 11 points off the bench, while Garret Kuns and Cameron Skinner finished with nine points apiece. Kuns led Morgan with seven rebounds, while Christian Wiscombe dished out nine assists for the Trojans, who conclude their regular season next Tuesday at Stansbury.

Girls basketball: Trojans finish perfect region slate

MORGAN -- It was a subdued celebration, but the Morgan Trojans cut down the nets on Tuesday night after knocking off Ogden 46-34 and finishing the Region 11 schedule with a perfect 12-0 record. The win marks two straight years of unblemished league play and Morgan's fourth region championship in a row.

But the Trojans (17-4 overall) weren't exactly thrilled with how their regular season ended. Numerous turnovers, too many missed layups and cold- and flu-like symptoms for half a dozen Morgan players resulted in a game that was too close for comfort. But the motivated Tigers had a lot to do with that.

"We've got some sick girls," Morgan coach Brad Matthews said. "Practice the last couple of days has been rough and some of them were having a hard time breathing. But that's still no excuse for bad passes and turnovers. Ogden had a good game plan. We got out of what we do partly because of what Ogden was doing."

Betty Jean Norris

Betty Jean Norris, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012. A graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the South Morgan Cemetery. Prep basketball: Trojans dig deep to down Bears

MORGAN -- Lively, energetic, passionate. All are apropos terms used to describe this year's Morgan Trojans.

Coach Jim Wiscombe has another label: blue-collar. That one might have been the most fitting on Friday night as the hard-working Trojans knocked off bitter rival Bear River 64-51 and ensured themselves the No. 1 seed from Region 11 in the upcoming state 3-A playoffs.

Charges filed against couple in teen's death

OGDEN -- Alexis Rasmussen died of a drug overdose late Sept. 10 or early Sept. 11 in the home of Eric and Dea Millerberg where she was baby-sitting.

The overdose was not intentional, rather the reckless result of child abuse, Weber County Attorney Dee Smith said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

After a four-month investigation, Eric Millerberg was charged Tuesday with child abuse homicide and three other felonies in the death of the North Ogden teen.

Prep basketball: Trojans continue push for top seed

MORGAN - After reaching the state 3-A championship game a year ago and then losing players such as Casey Evans, Jared Brooks and Dallin Schenk to graduation, it would have been natural to expect the Morgan Trojans to experience at least some drop in production.

But seven games into Region 11 play, the Trojans remain undefeated and in the driver's seat for a repeat of the region title and a No. 1 seed in next month's playoffs. Morgan (13-3 overall) maintained that position thanks to a 64-50 win over Stansbury on Wednesday night.

Girls basketball: Blazzard helps Trojans slaughter Scots

MORGAN -- If you score the first 33 points of the game, chances are pretty good you're going to win.

That's precisely what Morgan did against Ben Lomond on Tuesday night. The Scots couldn't manage a single basket until midway through the second quarter when Taylor Hughes finally hit a free throw to put the Scots on the board.
