$425 fine threatens OHS graduate’s place at ceremony

OGDEN — Yolanda Valdez said daughter Annissia was excited about her May 22 graduation ceremony from Ogden High School until late last month, when she was presented with a bill.

Valdez said she got a letter April 28 informing her that Annissia needed to pay $425 in “attendance credit loss” fees in order to receive her diploma at graduation. Valdez said the other option given was that Annissia could work off fees through community service, but Valdez said there’s not enough time to do that before the ceremony.

All graduating students get diplomas, Valdez was told, but only those whose fees have been cleared can walk at commencement.

Boston bombing in forefront of Ogden Marathon runners’ minds during rainy dash

OGDEN — Steady streams of runners swished through steady streams of rain Saturday to triumph in a sometimes-emotional Zions Bank Ogden Marathon.

Many of the thousands of runners who competed in the race were wearing the flagship yellow and blue of the Boston Marathon, making their run at Ogden a redemptive and commemorative race.

“(The) Boston (tragedy) made me want to run more,” said Emily Jeppesen, a half-marathon runner from Fruit Heights. “You don’t want to let them (terrorists) take that away from you. It’s important to run. It gives them the power if you don’t run.”

Biologist at medical conference in Ogden: Don’t be afraid of all organisms living on you

OGDEN — How many organisms are living on your body?

Most of the genes living on you are viral, fungal and microbial — and your body has more of those on it than human genes, says an evolutionary ecologist.

Rob Dunn, a biologist and writer in the Department of Biology at North Carolina State University, was the keynote speaker Thursday during the 68th annual Ogden Surgical Medical Society Conference at the Eccles Conference Center.

Stephen Phillip Ellenwood

Weber County Attorney: Warrant in Ogden cold case sealed to keep element of surprise

OGDEN — An arrest warrant for Stephen Phillip Ellenwood, accused of the 1993 homicide of a 92-year-old Ogden woman, had been sealed to protect another victim and witnesses, according to court documents

Weber County Attorney Dee Smith explained why the warrant was kept under wraps in an affidavit unsealed Friday.

“Stephen Ellenwood is currently not in custody and does not know that his DNA profile matched the DNA taken from the deceased’s home and another victim,” Smith wrote in the affidavit that was sealed along with the arrest warrant on April 26.

“He also does not know that his fingerprints match those taken from the deceased home. Releasing this information prior to service of the arrest warrant would provide an advantage ... to learn what the police now know and to abscond or evade apprehension. It may also endanger the other victim and other witness.”

Also, if the arrest warrant hadn’t been sealed, the case likely would have been reported by the media, which may have alerted Ellenwood, Smith said.
