PROMONTORY -- A roar and flames filled the air, bringing cheers from about 4,000 onlookers at the successful test of the Ares I rocket motor Thursday.
Those gathered to watch the test at Alliant Techsystems, also known as ATK, were not disappointed when the motor performed properly, burning for about two minutes and sending a plume of dust skyward.
"You know some of us have been around this industry -- gosh, I hate to admit it -- for 25 years, and seen a lot of static fires. And I can tell you, this one was special," said Alex Priskos, Ares I First Stage manager.
