BYU blasts Pepperdine 86-48

PROVO — Charles Abouo was feeling it, and so were the rest of the Cougars.

Brigham Young (21-6 overall, 9-3 West Coast Conference) smashed Pepperdine 86-48 on Saturday at the Marriott Center, getting a season-best 23 points from its senior forward and cruising to its highest margin of victory this season.

Abouo, who knocked down five 3-pointers, wfinished 7 of 11 overall and also hauled in 12 rebounds to lead all players.

Busy week in wrestling, swimming

PROVO -- Davis' Sam Bryson led the Top of Utah charge on the first day of the state 5-A swimming championships at BYU.

Bryson swam second in the boys 50-yard freestyle race.

Gillespie: Provo comedian's video offensive

OGDEN -- When Adrienne Gillespie saw a Utah video in the news and that it was close to becoming viral, she had a gut reaction.

"I am so offended, so disheartened," she posted on her Facebook page. "Few things give me pause such as this."

Comedian's BYU black history video goes viral

PROVO -- A YouTube video of a comedian who painted his face black to quiz Brigham Young University students about Black History Month is bringing some unwanted attention to the Mormon-run school.

PROVO -- Police are looking for a suspect after a 20-year-old female jogger says she was attacked with a knife and sexually assaulted on the Provo River trail.

Cougars right ship by beating No. 24 'Zags; Portland next

PROVO -- Brigham Young had another tough night making outside shots, hitting 3 of 12 from 3-point range Thursday against Gonzaga.

The Cougars made up for it defensively in an 83-73 win over No. 24 Gonzaga, holding the Bulldogs to 27 percent shooting in the first half and 41 percent overall.

Author to speak on LDS black history

PROVO -- Brigham Young University will host Margaret Blair Young, one of the authors of "Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons," in a lecture at noon Wednesday in the Education in Zion auditorium.

College basketball roundup: Wolfpack rallies to tip Aggies in thriller

RENO, Nev. -- Deonte Burton hit an off-balance 3-pointer with 11.2 seconds left as Nevada rallied to beat Utah State 53-52 on Thursday, tying a program record with its 16th consecutive victory.

Malik Story scored 18 points and Burton added 13 for the Wolf Pack (19-3, 8-0 Western Athletic).

Preston Medlin had 15 points and Brockeith Pane 12 for the Aggies (12-11, 4-4).

Cougars no match for Gaels

PROVO -- Perimeter shooting was a strength for BYU earlier in the season.

Now it has become a weakness for the Cougars.

St. Mary’s experienced no such trouble knocking down shots from the outside.

It proved to be the difference for the Gaels in earning an 80-66 victory over BYU on Saturday at the Marriott Center.

St. Mary’s shot 7 of 18 from the perimeter while limiting the Cougars to just 2 of 13 from the 3-point line.

It is part of a prolonged drought from the perimeter for BYU.

Saint Mary's coach breaks left thumb in accident; will coach tonight

PROVO -- Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett is coaching with a broken left thumb after a locker room mishap.

Bennett was injured after the 21st-ranked Gaels' 71-64 win at Loyola Marymount on Thursday night. He opened the locker room door and a white board fell on his thumb.

The school says Bennett had surgery in Los Angeles about 2 a.m. on Friday and rejoined the team in time for a flight to Utah. Bennett is coaching Saturday night's game at BYU with a cast on his left thumb.
