Richfield fifth-grader suspended for bringing stolen handgun to school

RICHFIELD -- Police say a fifth-grade student in Sevier County has been suspended and is facing criminal charges for bringing a stolen handgun to school in a backpack.

Officers investigate after a veteran policeman and a man were wounded in an exchange of gunfire on a main boulevard in Mesquite, Nev., on Thursday.  The officer was wounded in the leg by a man who stepped from a Geo Metro with Utah plates and fired at least once during a traffic stop, says Mesquite Officer Jeffrey Smith. Officer, gunman wounded in shootout in Mesquite

LAS VEGAS — A veteran police officer and a gunman were wounded in a brief exchange of gunfire Thursday on a main road in the Nevada resort city of Mesquite, authorities say.

A 48-year-old Richfield, Utah, woman in the vehicle wasn’t injured, and her name wasn’t released, said Mesquite Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, department spokesman.

The woman was detained for police questioning. Smith described her as cooperative and said she wasn’t immediately charged with a crime.

St. Joseph Jayhawks win state 1-A girls tournament opener

RICHFIELD — The defending state 1-A champion St. Joseph Jayhawks opened up a tight game with a strong second half to defeat Wayne 51-35 in the opening game of the state tournament on Wednesday at the Sevier Valley Center.

St. Joseph (19-0) outscored Wayne 26-12 after the break. Liz Tomon led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Prep basketball: Eagles a win away from 1-A title

The semifinal round of a state prep basketball tournament provides the spectrum of emotions, and Friday was no different in Utah.

Orem and Olympus punched their state 4-A tickets, while Lone Peak and Brighton and claimed much coveted 5-A berths in action at West Valley City's Maverik Center.

A day after knocking off Region 18 champion Tintic, the Tigers took on Region 17 champion LCA on Thursday in the quarterfinal-round action at the Sevier Valley Center.

Bobby Porter's Eagles turned a close game into a rout with a strong third-period surge and turned back Panguitch 74-58 on Wednesday in first-round action.

Girls basketball: Jayhawks bully Pirates to reach 1-A final

RICHFIELD -- The Jayhawks will meet a familiar foe for the state 1-A girls basketball championship.

St. Joseph jumped ahead of Piute right off the bat in Friday's semifinals at the Sevier Valley Center, coasting to a 63-41 and into the finals.

The Jayhawks will meet Rich at 5 p.m. for the title.

Girls basketball: Jayhawks, Eagles advance in 1-A

RICHFIELD -- While both the St. Joseph and Layton Christian girls basketball teams won their openers on Wednesday at the state 1-A tournament at the Sevier Valley Center, the Eagles' Alissa Atisme earned the buzz of the night with her scoring performance against Tintic.

Layton Christian Academy posted an impressive 57-38 win over Tintic, riding Atisme's 35-point outburst.
