SANDY — Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love has declared she wants another shot at the congressional seat occupied by Democrat Jim Matheson.

Competition tests students’ mechanical prowess

SANDY — “If you can, start your engines.”

That was the command given by Rick Bouillon, dean of the School of Technical Specialties at Salt Lake Community College, as he started the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition last week for the top 10 high school automotive teams from across the state.

Of course, none of the 2013 Ford Fusions started when the competition began because they had all been deliberately bugged with identical issues.

Real Salt Lake adds Star Wars theme for fans to Saturday's match

SANDY – Real Salt Lake announced on Monday that the club will host Star Wars Day during its May 4 match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The 7 p.m. kickoff will feature interactive games, costumed characters and promotions inspired by George Lucas’ iconic film series.

Real Salt Lake fans who attend the match dressed in a Star Wars costume will have the opportunity to march on the field in the Parade of Kings, with up to 300 fans allowed on the Rio Tinto Stadium pitch for the pregame procession.

New facts emerge about man killed in shooting

SANDY — Relatives of a 49-year-old man shot and killed by a Willard police officer Friday night told Sandy police repeatedly in the days leading up to his death that he intended to commit suicide, according to records obtained by the Standard-Examiner.

MLS punishes 2 Salt Lake players, warns KC

 

NEW YORK — Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee has suspended Real Salt Lake defender Abdoulie Mansally one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for head-butting D.C. United midfielder Perry Kitchen in the 61st minute of Saturday’s game.

RSL forward Alvaro Saborio was fined for arguing with a referee at the end of the game, a 1-0 win by DC.

Fake cop involved in Sandy home invasion burglary

SANDY — Sandy police are searching for as many as three suspects who staged a home invasion burglary after one of them gained entry by posing as a police officer.

Police say a young man was at home alone when he heard a knock on the door around 7 a.m. Friday.

The victim told police a man at the door had a badge and said he was an officer working on an investigation.

After the victim let him in, he was overpowered and restrained by the initial suspect and by one or two other men who joined him.

Rimando makes big saves; RSL falls to Sounders in Desert Diamond Cup final to wrap preseason

TUCSON, Ariz. — Real Salt Lake dropped the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup Final on Saturday night, conceding a second-half goal to fall to Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. 

Saturday’s game was RSL’s final preseason contest. The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to Utah on Sunday to begin preparations for its March 3 MLS regular season opener at defending Supporters’ Shield winners San Jose Earthquakes. 

RSL coach Jason Kreis ran out his first-choice lineup against a reserve-laden Sounders FC side, which played its starters on Friday in a friendly against Mexican side Veracruz. 

LDS stake president gives speech in church attacking Obama election

 

SANDY -- The president of a Mormon church stake is being accused of crossing the line by giving a speech from the pulpit that decried last year's re-election of President Barack Obama.

SANDY — Sixteen Utah couples plan to get married on Valentine’s Day while riding a Ferris wheel at Scheels sporting goods store in Sandy.

SANDY -- A 24-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with an Aug. 5 shootout at a Sandy garage that killed two people.
