Robber armed with golf club sought in South Ogden

SOUTH OGDEN — Police are hunting for a robber who used a golf club to hold up a convenience store in South Ogden.

The new Amphitheater, located at the Nature Park in South Ogden is just about ready for public use. The theater will be used by school children and for small community events. The amphitheater is part of a five phase plan at the park. JAMIE LAMPROS/Standard-Examiner correspondent

Workshop geared for students’ parents

SOUTH OGDEN — The Weber Family Resource Center at Club Heights Elementary on Tuesday will host a workshop on how parents can help children make the transition from grade school to junior high school.

Top of Utahns share stories of Boston Marathon horror, sadness

Thousands of Utahns worried and waited to hear from friends and acquaintances who had traveled to Boston for the annual Boston Marathon.

Among them was Gov. Gary R. Herbert, who worried about the safety of his own daughter, Jeanette, who was participating in the race.

In all, nearly 350 Utah runners were registered for Monday’s event, according to the Boston Athletic Association website at baa.org.

Several Top of Utah residents participated in the race or were near the blast site and reported their experiences to the Standard-Examiner.

Convicted con Wayne Ogden pleads guilty to federal fraud charges

SALT LAKE CITY — Former Weber County swindler Wayne Ogden pleaded guilty Friday to charges from his second federal fraud case.

A sentencing hearing is set for Aug. 15 before U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart.

The sentencing will also cover the charges from Ogden’s February jury conviction in the same federal courthouse on another fraud conviction. Unique to that 2002 real estate scam, which investigators said turned into a Ponzi scheme, was Ogden’s claim that he was working undercover for federal regulators.

Science not just a subject at H. Guy Child Elementary

OGDEN — The gloved university student stood, sober-faced, before the group of 26 third-graders at H. Guy Child Elementary School.

“This plain-looking cooler holds liquid nitrogen that is so cold, if I stuck in my bare hand, it would shatter like an ice cube,” said Jordan Flocken, a University of Utah science student.

The silence of the students, ages 8 and 9, lasted, oh, maybe a millisecond.

“Do it, do it, do it!” they chanted.

Pit bull ransacks stranger's S. Ogden house, forces euthanization of cat

SOUTH OGDEN — Police are unsure who owns a pit bull that ran into a house Saturday and mauled a cat so badly it had to be euthanized.

Cat owners say their 13-year-old tabby Milo lost its teeth and several back claws, then bled severely throughout the room where it was attacked around 12:30 p.m., before he could be separated from the dog.

A veterinarian could not save the cat, and Milo had to be euthanized.

Easter bunny could use some help in South Ogden

SOUTH OGDEN — The city is seeking volunteers to help fill more than 20,000 Easter eggs for the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The hunt will be held at 9 a.m. March 30 at Friendship Park, 655 E. 5500 South. Children ages 1 to 12 are welcome to attend.

Free photos with the Easter Bunny will start at 8 a.m. and resume after the hunt.
