Arguments ensue about South Weber assignments

Heated arguments recently erupted at a council meeting, following Mayor Jeffery Monroe’s city assignments.

Several members of the council expressed the desire to keep their previous assignments because of their past work.

Councilwoman Sara Lusk argued that these assignments were “given to us with no say” and that each member had already put much “knowledge, time, effort, dedication and willingness” into those areas.

After much discussion, Monroe explained that the new assignments had not been approved yet, so that each member would keep their last year’s assignment until issues were reviewed and discussed at the next work meeting.

SOUTH WEBER -- John Ward, a public finance director for Zions Bank, presented a plan for the city to refinance its 2004 sales tax revenue bond.

By lowering the interest rate to below 3 percent, the refinancing would save the city $44,000.

Ward showed the council members a pamphlet that addresses financial debt and economic development.

The bond buyer index showed that the interest rates had hit "rock bottom at phenomenally low interest rates."

Refinancing city bond may save money in long run

SOUTH WEBER — City Manager Rodger Worthen maintains that by refinancing the current sales tax revenue bond they borrowed in 2004 from 4.7 percent interest to 3.05 percent, the city will save approximately $40,000.

The city has 17 years left to pay on the loan, but Worthen believes the city can decrease that time to 15 years.

Even though it will cost around $30,000 to refinance, the city will still save substantially.

Mayor Jeff Monroe wants to get an approval on Worthen’s refinance plan in January.

Money for South Weber road rehab a concern

Even though the city will maintain its regular portion of road money, City Manager Roger Worthen said that more road funding will be necessary due to increased drivers.

However, he contends, money will decrease as more and more electric car drivers impact gasoline tax, making fewer funds for road maintenance.

Right now the money they will receive will only serve as “a bandaid” and South Weber “will have to pick and choose which roads they maintain.”

Resident desires exit plans for Staker Parsons

SOUTH WEBER — Gary Gears, a resident of South Weber, during a recent community council meeting, asked there was an exit and remediation plan for Geneva and Staker Parsons plants.

“When fall comes and the canal shuts down, the dust problem escalates,” he said.

Councilman David Thomas said there was a plan for Staker Parsons; however, Geneva has refused to comply with any exit plan. He also said that the state legislation regulations for gravel pits make it “impossible for local jurisdiction.”
