Morgan officer who shot woman won't be prosecuted

LAYTON — Although a Morgan County deputy’s shooting of a female motorist in November appears to have been unjustified, the officer won’t be prosecuted, Davis County Attorney Troy S. Rawlings said Tuesday.

South Weber approves truck purchase

SOUTH WEBER -- The city council unanimously approved the purchase of a $48,005.44 public works truck and plow.

During the discussion, Councilman Farrell Poll stated, “I hate to see $50,000 spent on a truck to run around and read meters.”

He also said he wanted something “more economical.”

Staker Parsons reports water issue

SOUTH WEBER -- Dak Maxfield, the real estate manager for Staker Parson Companies, reported that the water use to keep the dust down in the pit for 2012 was more than nine million gallons.

Maxfield said Phase 3 of the mining would be done in 2013, then the seeding of the berm areas would begin.

The company’s intent was to focus on the north pit and to dig deeper in the lower pit, to include only five acres of exposed mining.

Fifth-graders take field trip to Mars

OGDEN — Stephanie Baltazar looked at the labeled, premeasured sheets of plastic she and her mission teammates had pieced together with duct tape.

The fifth-graders awaited the command decision that it was time to connect their plastic structures to box fans, to inflate their habitats for the Mission to Mars activity.

“I think this could work on Mars,” said Stephanie, 11, from Clearfield’s Holt Elementary School. “We built a habitat, and I think we’ll be able to fit our team into it. It would work as shelter.”

Woman shot in eye by Morgan deputy identified

SOUTH WEBER — The Davis County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman shot by a Morgan sheriff’s deputy as Kristine Nicole Biggs.

Biggs, 41, from Whitewater, Colo., is in critical condition in an Ogden hospital, said Davis County Sheriff’s Capt. Kenneth R. Payne.

Biggs was shot in the left eye following a chase that covered 32 miles in Morgan, Weber and Davis counties and ended at 10:21 p.m. Sunday.

Former Utahn sentenced in 2 states for fraud; Layton church members among victims

A former South Weber man has been sentenced in two states on federal bank fraud and money laundering charges in a multiyear real estate investment lure that amounted to a Ponzi scheme.

Federal officials are keeping victim information confidential but bilked investors include members of a Layton church.

Raymond P. Morris, 44, was sentenced by U.S District Judge Clark Waddoups in Salt Lake City on Nov. 13 to 51 months in federal prison.

Limit placed on S. Weber land developers

SOUTH WEBER -- Councilmen Joe Gertge, David Thomas, and Randy Hilton approved a change to Ordinance 12-08 at a recent council meeting.

This ordinance allows applicants of new subdivisions to have 120 days to act on their request for a new subdivision development.

If the developer goes beyond the 120 days, they must go through the process again of applying for the subdivision and paying the fee.

Joe Gertge selected as new councilman

SOUTH WEBER -- Joe Gertge, was selected by the city council to replace Sara Lusk, who has moved out of town.

Gertge, who took over on Sept. 15, will serve for the next 15 months.

“I saw a website that the councilman was available and was interested,” Gertge said.

Two battle for Davis School Board District 4 seat

FARMINGTON — Providing a quality education for Davis School District students is a top priority for both Kathie Bone and Paul Prier, who are vying for the District 4 seat on the Board of Education.

The winner will provide representation for Fruit Heights, Kaysville, Layton and South Weber during a four-year term.
