Documentary: Inmate may be involved in OJ case

TAMPA, Fla. — A documentary says a Florida death-row inmate might have been involved in the murder of O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend, a claim being criticized by one victim’s family and being looked at skeptically by a detective who has dealt with the convict.

The Investigation Discovery show, “My Brother the Serial Killer,” will air Wednesday. The film is a look at Glen Rogers, a carnival worker whom Florida jurors convicted in 1997 of killing a woman in a Tampa motel room.

Rogers, who is now 50, was also convicted of murder in California and is a suspect in homicides in Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky — and possibly several other states.

Tampa teen in school plot had run-ins with law

TAMPA, Fla. — Two years before he was accused of plotting to bomb his high school, Jared Cano confronted police with a metal baseball bat when they came to his apartment looking for a stolen pistol, which they eventually found in his bedroom. He was 15 at the time, but already had several run-ins with police.

Reggae star Buju Banton gets 10 years in drug case

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A federal judge sentenced Grammy-winning reggae singer Buju Banton to 10 years in prison Thursday, the lowest sentence legally allowed for his role in a large cocaine trafficking deal in 2009.

The 38-year-old Jamaican recording artist got a break when U.S. District Judge James S. Moody threw out a gun conviction, which would have added another five years to the minimum sentence. Banton's attorney, David Markus, said with time already served and good behavior, he could be out in six years.

In a statement he wrote after the sentencing, Banton -- whose given name is Mark Myrie -- thanked family, fans and supporters from around the world who flooded the court file with letters of support.

Boy allergic to peanuts has dog to sniff out danger

TAMPA, Fla. -- Billy Gensel doesn't open doors or shake hands.

His mother pulls back the handle, and the 11-year-old enters a room at the Patel Conservatory, where he greets his jazz teacher with an elbow-to-elbow bump.

Musicians and staff members at Patel know the routine and have already prepared for Billy's arrival. They have turned off vending machines with peanut-filled snacks and wiped down the keys of a baby grand piano. They allow his specially trained dog to sniff out every hallway, each room and every piece of equipment that Billy might get close to.

Billy has a severe peanut allergy. If he touches or even breathes in a minuscule particle of peanut, he could die.

This is why Karen Gensel rarely leaves her son alone anywhere. He mostly stayed home the first eight years of his life.

Then his parents bought Remy, one of the few known allergen-alert dogs in the area.
