Prep softball: Barrera gets Roy into 4-A semifinal

TAYLORSVILLE -- With her team down 5-3 in the last inning of Tuesday's 4-A championship-bracket game, Jordynn Barrera stepped to the plate for Roy High knowing she had to put the ball in play and try to move the base runner the Royals had on.

Turns out it was easier for her to just hit a two-run dinger, tying the game and sending it to extra innings where the Royals scored the final run in the bottom of the eighth to advance with a 6-5 win over Region 6 champion Bountiful at the Valley Softball Complex.

Bears lock up fifth straight 3-A softball crown

TAYLORSVILLE -- It is best not to wake a slumbering Bear.

After getting run-ruled for the first time this season while also suffering just its second shutout, three-time defending Region 11 champion Bear River had two choices: Feel sorry for itself and engage in negativity with finger-pointing or regroup and make history.

Prep softball: Bears one win from five-peat

TAYLORSVILLE -- One more win puts Da Bears into rarefied air.

No school has swept five consecutive state softball titles. Bingham (1991-94) and Bear River (2008-11) each have won four.

Prep softball: Weather puts Bear River in holding pattern

TAYLORSVILLE -- The Bear River softball team was stalled on deck Friday as the morning rain storm made the Valley Softball Complex fields unplayable for much of the day.

The Bears (23-4) will meet Spanish Fork today at 10 a.m., and could play at 2:30 p.m. with a victory. A loss would put the Bears in a situation of needing to win as many as three more games today to make it back to the state 3-A championship game, now set for Monday at 2 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College.

ShayLynne Clark, a soon-to-graduate Weber State University student, worked with the WSU Chamber Choir and a student dance teacher to collaborate on a performance called "Coil." The project was part of Clark's research on how groups come up with ideas. She found that groups with a leader who steps back when ideas are flowing come up with more creative ideas than groups with an overbearing leader or a leader who doesn't truly lead. "Coil" will be staged Thursday. (Contributed photo)

WSU student: Groups solve problems more creatively with right leader

OGDEN — ShayLynne Clark plans to graduate from Weber State University in May and head to medical school this fall. And for her four years of hard work, she will take with her three bachelor’s degrees, in anthropology, microbiology and interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on chemistry.

She’ll also take with her the strong belief, backed by her own research, that people who work together productively as a group can solve problems a lot more creatively than they could in groups with overbearing leaders.
