Islamic gunman dead after French standoff

 

TOULOUSE, France — In a dramatic end to a 32-hour standoff, a masked French SWAT team slipped into an Islamic extremist’s apartment Thursday, sparking a firefight that ended with the man being shot in the head as he jumped out the window, weapon in hand.

The suspect, 23-year-old Mohamed Merah, was wanted in the deaths of three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi — all killed since March 11 in what Merah reportedly told police was an attempt to "bring France to its knees."

France shootings suspect holed up in building

 

TOULOUSE, France — In a tense, daylong standoff, French riot police surrounded a building in southwest France on Wednesday, demanding the surrender of a gunman who they suspect of slaying seven victims in an al-Qaida-linked terror spree.

Hundreds of police cordoned off the streets around an apartment complex in the city of Toulouse after a pre-dawn raid erupted into a firefight. Three police were wounded as they tried to arrest a 24-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who is suspected of killing three Jewish children, a rabbi and three French paratroopers.

Gunman may have filmed killings at French school

TOULOUSE, France -- Police blanketed southern France on Tuesday, searching for a gunman -- possibly a racist, anti-Semitic serial killer -- who killed four people at a Jewish school and may have filmed his attack.

Gunman kills 4 outside French Jewish school

TOULOUSE, France -- A motorcycle gunman opened fire Monday in front of a Jewish school in the French city of Toulouse, killing a rabbi, his two small sons and one other child, the prosecutor's office said.
