Girls basketball: Lakers get ugly win over Griz

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It was not smooth sailing this week for the league-leading Lakers.

First up was a rocky six-point road win Tuesday over last-place Box Elder. Then Thursday, Bonneville had to regroup after a turnover-plagued, three-point third quarter to subdue the Grizzlies 49-37 and remain undefeated in Region 5.

"I think we had a good first half," Lakers junior guard/forward Emilie Volk said. "We weren't up on our feet like we should have been on defense and they got some 3-pointers. We couldn't miss when we were up there (shooting 49.1 percent in a 65-39 win on Jan. 17). I think we were ready; our shots weren't falling as much."

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

Prep basketball: Hutchins, Lakers trump tough-luck Roy

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Maybe Jake Hutchins should play hurt more often.

Hutchins, a 6-foot 3 senior forward, scored 21 points with a heavily-bandaged shooting hand to lead Bonneville over an under-manned but scrappy Roy squad 67-49 in a Region 5 matchup Wednesday evening.

Girls basketball: Buzzer-beater lifts Lakers to victory

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It says something when your top two scorers do not crack double digits -- combining for just 11 points, 13 under their season averages -- and you knock off the two-time defending league champion, which had only lost one Region 5 game over the last two seasons.

Still, it took a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore shooting guard Kayla Eilertson to boost the Lakers past state 4-A runner-up Mountain Crest 48-45.

Girls basketball: Lakers win, hold on to share of first place

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Is this the year the Lakers win their first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season?

"It's our goal to win region and we believe we're good enough to win region," Bonneville senior combo forward McKinlee Westmoreland said.

The Lakers, behind 15 combined bench points from Lexie Stratford and Abby Toller, overcame 38.0 percent shooting (19-of-50) Thursday to beat Region 5 runner-up Sky View 55-46 and retain their share of first place.

Gladwell

Prep football: Gladwell returns to Bonneville

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Who better to be the Lakers new head football coach than a former Bonneville High School quarterback?

After having just one coach for 31 years -- the legendary Thom Budge -- 33-year-old Tyler Gladwell is the third Lakers coach spanning the last three years.

He replaces Randy Johnson, who won the 1992 state 4-A championship at Clearfield with a 27-0 victory over Bonneville, and stepped down after only one season with the Lakers.
