Rocket Men - A History of ATK and the Space Shuttle

Rocket Men

In "Rocket Men" engineers who spent more than 30 years working for ATK Space Systems in Utah describe building the giant solid rocket motors that have powered NASA's space shuttle into space since 1978.

They relive crawling inside room-sized solid rocket motors that could blow up at any second, describe the infinite precision needed to make the motors fly properly, and detail the obstacles they had to overcome to build this critical part of the American man-in-space effort.

Most of all, they tell of the struggles the company faced after the 1986 Challenger disaster. Allan McDonald, who played a key role during the disaster and led the company's recovery, tells about the political, corporate and engineering challenges he had to battle.

The company then built a safer motor with a proven record of reliability. Now it is faced with even bigger challenges as the economy and national politics change the face of space exploration.
