LAYTON -- A 22-year-old woman has been charged with second-degree felony child abuse for causing substantial injury to a 3-year-old girl.

Sandra Flores, of Layton, was booked Friday in Davis County Jail on no bail following an investigation that began July 5, said Layton Police Lt. Garret Atkin.

Flores brought the toddler to Davis Hospital and Medical Center in Layton on July 5, saying the little girl, who was unresponsive, had fallen in the bathroom and hit her head.

Flores is in a domestic partnership with the girl's mother, Atkin said, and "regularly cared for the child."

Flores was the only adult in the home with the girl at the time.

Police are not releasing the name of the girl, who is in critical condition with significant head trauma at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

"She is still alive," Atkin said.

Atkin said a 4-year-old boy was in the home as well, but there was "no indication he was abused."

The Department of Child and Family Services has been notified, Atkin said.

Flores could make her first court appearance on the charges in 2nd District Court in Farmington as early as Tuesday.
