ATV rider, age 70, injured by fall into silage pit

HONEYVILLE -- A 70-year-old man was in serious condition Wednesday after he fell 16 feet on an all-terrain vehicle.

The man was riding his ATV when he came too close to a neighbor's silage pit, which is used to store fertilizer, near 6300 North on Highway 38. At 8 p.m., he and the ATV fell into the deep end, which is a 16-foot drop, said Box Elder County Sheriff's Chief Kevin Potter.

"He fell straight down. A neighbor happened to be watching and called for help," Potter said. The neighbor who called for help is believed to be the same neighbor who owns the pit.

When emergency responders arrived, they found the ATV was still on the seriously injured man. He was taken by ambulance to Brigham City Community Hospital, then flown to an Ogden hospital for further treatment.

His identity was withheld until his family members have been notified, Potter said.

He may not have realized how close he was to the pit, Potter said.
