MANTUA -- None of the eight people involved in a side-swipe and head-on collision in Sardine Canyon was seriously injured.
A gold 2002 Chevrolet Venture was traveling south on State Road 91 on Wednesday afternoon when it crossed the median into the northbound lane just south of Mantua.
There, the van sideswiped a red older-model Ford pickup before striking a gray 2006 Toyota Corolla head-on about 1:40 p.m., said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.
Both the Venture and the Corolla went off the road, the former hitting a wire fence and the latter hitting trees near Box Elder Creek. Both wound up in the area of Mile Marker 5.
A 44-year-old man from Smithfield was driving the Venture. Two women and a teenage girl were also in the car.
The Corolla was driven by a 30-year-old woman from Provo. Her 92-year-old grandmother was riding in the front passenger seat. There was also a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl in the backseat.
No one suffered more than minor injuries in the crash, including the boy, who suffered a cut to his head, according to UHP.
Everyone was wearing seat belts.
Johnson said everyone involved in the head-on collision was lucky to have only suffered minor injuries.
A female driver was the only person in the pickup truck. She had pulled over right after being sideswiped. She was not injured and drove her truck home from the crash.
Troopers closed down one lane in each direction as they investigated the crash. That investigation was still ongoing as of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Johnson said he believes the crash may have been caused by inattentive driving and that possibly one of the drivers fell asleep.
The stretch of road where the accident occurred is one of the few spots on SR 91 where it is possible to cross into the north or south lanes. Most of the road has a barrier in the median to prevent crossover crashes.
