Father denies son's role in Wendover slaying

ELKO, Nev. -- The father of a Nevada man charged in the murder of a West Wendover high school student says his son told him he did not kill the girl.

The Deseret News says (http://bit.ly/nEpVJs) Kip Patten testified about the conversation in court Wednesday on the second day of a preliminary hearing in Elko, Nev., for his 18-year-old son.

Kody Patten has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murder charges in the March beating death of 16-year-old Micaela (Mick-KAY'-la) "Mickey" Costanzo.

Kip Patten says the conversation occurred the same day Kody Patten allegedly confessed to police.

A judge has ordered Patten's 19-year-old girlfriend Toni Fratto to stand trial for the murder.

Prosecutors say Patten drove Costanzo from school to the desert outside West Wendover where she was killed.
