Teen hiker found in Uintas after wandering 12 miles

KAMAS -- A 17-year-old Idaho teen who vanished while camping with family in northern Utah has been found hungry but safe about 12 miles from their campsite.

Officials in Summit County on Tuesday had dispatched rescuers on horseback, in helicopters and planes to search for Joseph Schellenberg of Rexburg, Idaho. They found him later that evening about 18 hours after he was last seen near Long Lake in the mountains about 70 miles east of Salt Lake City.

The teen has a mental disability.

Family members say he is very athletic and can walk or run for miles.

The family says they canceled the 50-mile-hike they had planned in Utah after finding the boy.
