HONEYVILLE -- The hot springs of natural mineral water at Crystal Hot Springs are still open for business, but two swimming pools that had a chemical leak last weekend will remain closed until further notice.
Jill Parker, spokeswoman for the Bear River Health Department, said one of the pools leaked chlorine gas at 10:30 p.m. Saturday. She said the mechanism that pumps a mixture of chlorine, hydrochloric acid and water into the pool malfunctioned, allowing chlorine gas to form, which was then pushed out when the water pumps started working again.
People near the pool at the time "experienced severe irritation to their respiratory systems," Parker said.
Box Elder County Sheriff's Sgt. Dale Ward said five adults and three children were taken to hospitals in Logan and Brigham City for treatment, but none were admitted to the hospitals. He said a deputy who was the first responder to the scene also was exposed to the gas and suffered some ill effects, but was not injured.
Adam Nelson, a manager at Crystal Hot Springs, said the natural hot springs have never used chemical treatments and so weren't affected by the accident. The pools that do are a slide pool and a small lap pool.
Parker said Wednesday those pools will remain closed until the health department is sure the cause of the problem has been found and fixed.
