FARR WEST -- The city council has unanimously rezoned property at 2214 N. 2000 West from residential to commercial.
Property owner Kent Malan said he plans for the property to become a retail business, operated by his daughter, that will sell and display paving stones, stones for rock walls and similar products used for patios and driveways.
The business will not do any manufacturing but will install the products it sells to customers, he said.
During a public hearing, neighbor Jerry Ellis raised a concern.
"What are you going to do for the dust control?" he said. "When I bought the property across the street two years ago, they ran me through the wringer about keeping the property up."
Ellis said the property he bought is just his residence, but the city was tough about what would be allowed there.
He also said his vehicle was nearly rear-ended when turning into his own driveway and he wondered what would happen with increased traffic.
Malan said the business would install a turning lane and that dust should not be a problem because the product, paving stones, installed at the business would only be part of its display.
"This is a very clean business," he said.
"It's a no-brainer. Most of that is going to be put into pavers. It will be a nice building to display and sell products."
Malan said the business will stand on 1 acre.
"As soon as we close on a business deal on the first (of August), all those buildings go, everything goes," he said.
"The lot behind my house will be storage of the product they sell. It is going to be commercial."
