Police: Sandy woman deliberately stepped in front of train

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police are identifying a woman who died after stepping in front of a Utah Transit Authority train in Midvale.

Unified Police Dept. spokesman Lt. Justin Hoyal says 46-year-old Kimberly Merrill of Sandy was hit about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The train was travelling between 30 and 40 miles per hour at the time.

Hoyal says the actions appear to be deliberate.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter says trains were delayed through the day because service was limited to one track in the area following the accident.

Three people have died after being hit by UTA trains this year.
